HPL Sheet Thickness Guide: 6mm vs 8mm vs 10mm vs 12mm

For most Indian residential facades, 6mm or 8mm exterior HPL is the correct specification. 10mm and 12mm are generally reserved for large unsupported spans, high wind-load locations and commercial projects. Over-specifying thickness is one of the most common ways homeowners overspend.

Thickness by Application

6mm

The workhorse for residential exteriors. Suitable for standard facade panels, balcony infills, soffits and most elevation work where framework spacing is around 600mm. Lighter to handle, easier to cut, and meaningfully cheaper than thicker options.

8mm

A step up in rigidity. Used where panel sizes are larger, framework spacing is wider, or the location sees stronger wind exposure such as coastal areas and upper floors of taller buildings. Also a common choice for main gates where the panel will take daily contact.

10mm

Commercial territory. Large-format panels on offices, showrooms and institutional buildings, particularly where the design calls for fewer, bigger panels with minimal joint lines.

12mm

Heavy-duty and specialist use. Long unsupported spans, high wind-load facades, and applications where the panel edge itself is a visible design feature and needs visual mass. Also used for freestanding elements like partitions and lockers.

Why Thicker Is Not Automatically Better

Thicker sheets cost significantly more, weigh more, need stronger framework and are harder to handle on site. If your panel sizes and framework spacing do not demand the extra rigidity, you are paying for structural capacity you will never use.

Conversely, under-specifying causes real problems. A 6mm panel spanning too far between framework members will bow visibly, especially in direct sun where thermal movement adds to the deflection.

How to Decide

Work through these questions in order:

  1. What is your framework spacing? Tighter spacing allows thinner sheets. Around 600mm centres is typical for 6mm.
  2. How large is each panel? Bigger panels need more thickness to stay flat.
  3. What is the wind exposure? Coastal, high-rise and open-plain sites need more.
  4. Will the surface be touched daily? Gates and ground-floor walls benefit from 8mm.
  5. Is the panel edge visible? If yes, thickness becomes a design decision as well as a structural one.
