Buying HPL online is safe when the seller provides GST invoicing, a secure payment gateway, a written damage-in-transit policy and physical samples before you commit. If any of those four are missing, treat it as a warning sign regardless of how good the price looks.
The Ten-Point Checklist
1. Confirm it is exterior grade, in writing
This is the single most important check. Interior laminate sold for outdoor use is the most common problem in this market. Ask for the grade in writing on the invoice or order confirmation, not just verbally.
2. Get a physical sample first
Screen colours are unreliable. Monitor calibration, photo lighting and image compression all shift how a shade appears. Order or request a physical sample and check it against your own wall in daylight before placing a full order.
3. Verify GST registration and invoicing
A proper GST invoice matters for warranty claims, for any commercial project accounting, and as basic evidence that you are dealing with a registered business. A seller unwilling to issue one is a seller you cannot pursue later.
4. Check the payment gateway
Use sellers with an established payment gateway such as Razorpay, which provides a transaction record and buyer protection mechanisms. Be very cautious about direct bank transfers to a personal account or UPI-only arrangements with no order record.
5. Read the damage-in-transit policy
Large rigid sheets can be damaged in freight. Before ordering, establish in writing: who bears the risk during transit, what the inspection window is on delivery, what documentation is needed for a claim, and whether replacement or refund applies.
6. Inspect before signing the delivery receipt
Open the consignment and check panels for edge chips, corner damage and surface scratches before you sign. Photograph any damage immediately, in the presence of the delivery agent where possible. Signing a clean receipt makes later claims very difficult.
7. Confirm the actual sheet dimensions
Compare quotes on a per-square-foot basis, not per sheet. A sheet quoted cheaper may simply be smaller. Confirm exact size and thickness in the order.
8. Understand the warranty terms
Ask what is covered, for how long, what voids it, and how a claim is actually made. A warranty period stated in an advertisement means little without the written terms. Also check whether it covers material only or includes any labour component.
9. Order in one consignment
Different production batches can vary slightly in shade. Calculate your full requirement including wastage and order it together. Topping up later risks visible colour banding on the finished facade.
10. Check the return and refund policy
Understand the conditions before you buy, not after. Note that custom-cut or opened sheets are often non-returnable, which is a reasonable term but one you should know upfront.
Red Flags Worth Walking Away From
- Price dramatically below market with no explanation
- No GST invoice offered
- Payment only by direct transfer to a personal account
- No physical address or landline, only a mobile number
- Refusal to provide samples
- Vague or absent written warranty terms
- Pressure to order immediately on a “limited” offer
