When an HPL quote is dramatically below market, there is almost always a specific technical reason, and it is usually one of five things. None of them are visible on a new sheet, which is exactly why the problem surfaces two summers later rather than on delivery day.
The Five Usual Reasons
1. It is interior grade being sold for exterior use
By far the most common. Interior laminate lacks the UV-cured surface coating that exterior grade has. It looks identical when new. Outdoors it chalks, fades and eventually delaminates, often within twelve to twenty-four months in Indian sun.
This is not a subtle quality difference. It is the wrong product for the application.
2. Thin or single-pass UV coating
Even genuine exterior sheets vary in coating quality. A minimal single-pass coating costs less to apply and offers correspondingly less protection. The sheet is technically exterior grade; it simply will not last as long.
3. Lower core density
Less resin and fewer kraft layers means a lighter, cheaper sheet that is also less impact resistant and less dimensionally stable. It is more prone to bowing and to edge damage during handling.
4. Under-thickness
A sheet sold as 6mm that actually measures 5.4mm is meaningfully cheaper to produce. Measure delivered sheets with a vernier caliper rather than assuming.
5. Rejected or seconds stock
Production rejects with shade inconsistency, surface defects or dimensional variation, sold on at a discount without disclosure. Legitimate when disclosed and priced accordingly; a problem when sold as prime stock.
Warning Signs Before You Buy

- Seller cannot or will not state the grade in writing
- No UV coating specification available
- No fire test certificate available
- Warranty offered verbally but not in writing
- Sold generically as “laminate” rather than exterior-grade HPL

Checks You Can Actually Perform
Measure the thickness. A vernier caliper costs very little and settles the question immediately. Check several points across several sheets.
Weigh a sheet. Compare against the manufacturer’s stated weight per square metre. A significantly lighter sheet indicates lower density.
Inspect the edge. Look at the cut edge. Uniform, dense, tightly compressed layers indicate proper pressing. Visible voids or loose layering do not.
Ask for the invoice wording. Insist the grade appears on the invoice. A seller unwilling to write it down is telling you something.
What a Bad Purchase Actually Costs
The saving on sheet price is real but small relative to the total. If the cladding fails in three years, you pay for removal, disposal, replacement panels, and installation labour a second time, plus scaffolding again. The framework may be reusable, but nothing else is.
In practice, a failed facade costs several times what the initial saving was worth, and that is before accounting for the years of looking at a deteriorating building.
A Fair Caveat
Not every low price signals a problem. A manufacturer clearing genuine surplus stock, a regional producer with lower overheads, or a straightforward bulk discount are all legitimate. The point is not that cheap always means bad — it is that you should be able to identify why it is cheaper. If nobody can tell you, that is the warning sign.
